In The News

1) We would  like to note special community service projects that involve our

Song O' Sky members. A unique part of Sweet Adelines International's mission is providing educational opportunities not only for its members but also encouraging SAI members to share their knowledge with young people so that our craft continues to grow and thrive. In addition, SAI choruses reach out to any community organization that uses music to enrich the lives of others.

                                                  ~2014~

-In April we gave a benefit performance for the Weaverville Music Study Club's

N. Buncombe Music Scholarship Fund.  Check our Events Calendar for details.  Here is the nice promotion in the 4/21/14  Asheville Citizen-Times (D3).

-During January-February 2014 our music team, along with the director of the men's group, Land of the Sky, worked once a week with a choral class at Owen High School to prepare selected student groups to enter a county wide choral judging event at the end of February. The young people thoroughly enjoyed the harmony, and it is our hope that the sparks that are being ignited now will develop into barbershoppers for the future .

The quartet that participated in the choral event scored an impressive 85, and we invited them to be our guests at our April 8 Friends and Family Night. They sounded wonderful!

                                              ~2013~

-In October  our director, Sherry Sprague, served as mentor to a student at Brevard High School who wanted to develop and coach a barbershop quartet as her senior project. Sherry made several trips to Brevard, and her student did very well.

-In September, members of our music/membership teams gave a presentation on barbershop harmony craft to a UNC-Asheville class that was studying female vocal groups. Many of the students had never heard of Sweet Adelines International and were both receptive and appreciative of the information AND the harmony we provided.

-In August letters were sent to all choral directors in Buncombe and Henderson County and Ashville City high schools and universities offering the services of our music team (directors and section leaders) as presenters and coaches for classes in barbershop harmony. If they had the students, we would provide the coaches and materials.  Even though we had only two responses,we will continue to do this, in hope that as the word spreads, there will be more interest.

                                                         ~2010~

Song O' Sky did a 3 show series based on the concept of the popular radio show Prairie Home Companion to benefit the choral department of Enka High School. The choral teacher (a former Sweet Adeline, herself) taught one of her girls' groups a song that they performed with us on our final (and very successful) show--A Mountain Homecoming-- at the school.
