Betty Jean Parham- Asst. Director
Betty Jean grew up in Canton, NC (Haywood County) in a house filled with music. As a child, she sang with her family and learned from her father who taught shaped note singing. She received a diploma from the Sherwood Music School in Chicago. Returning to Canton she sang in a women's gospel trio for 5 years, and gospel music remains one of her favorites--"next to barbershop"-- that is. Betty Jean still lives in Canton, and has two sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren - all of whom share her enthusiasm for harmony "of one kind or another."
Retired from teaching piano and organ in Haywood County for 43 years, she is still making music as the organist for West Canton Baptist Church and the pianist for Wells Funeral Home. A member of Song O' Sky since 1977 (first as bass and now as baritone), Betty Jean has been Director ( 1994-2008, 2012) and Assistant Director and assists in all musical activities for the chorus. She is also a talented arranger, lyricist, and story teller--spinning many tall tales about her Haywood County neighbors that keep everyone laughing.
Song O'Sky is blessed to have these talented women as our musical leaders!
